Kunsang Tenzin, founder and director, THC,” It is our duty and responsibility to help and support your cause in all the way that we can. We are happy that Woebar approached us this time and for sure, we will support the cause if we can.
On the 24th of October 2009, people came together in countries all around the world to demand that action is taken to solve the climate crisis. Temperatures are currently rising all over the globe and this will have consequences everywhere, especially here in the Himalayas.
The increased amount of carbon dioxide, CO2 in the atmosphere results in increased global warming. The Tibetan Plateau, often referred to as the third pole, is one of the places where the effects of global warming are particularly easy to notice. Glaciers are shrinking, the permafrost is disappearing and local species are threatened by extinction. Thus, here in McLeod Ganj, people came together under the slogan “Cut CO2 emissions to 350 ppm, Save Tibet from Melting”. The day was organized by the Environment Desk of the Tibetan Settlement Office, the Environment and Development Desk of the DIIR and Tesi Environmental Awareness Movement. The day was inaugurated by His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa and during his speech he expressed the importance of taking care of the environment around us and in the world at large. Three volunteers and ten students from Tibet Hope Center took part in the drive of the campaign and here are some of their thoughts.
Dickyi, 25, student, mentioned that she is very happy to be part of the environment issue. “I am very thankful to Tibet Hope Center for making me one of their team members”.
Lhakchung, 28, board member, expressed that: “It doesn’t matter who is doing something for the environment, but what matters is that we participate in that cause and I am very happy that we did. It is also good that Tibet Hope Center took initiative to participate by providing volunteers for the campaign. Since, we (Tibet Hope Center) are mainly engaged in social service, taking care of the environment is also one of our social services that the board of directors and students can offer.”
Sonam Palden, 23, student, added that: “I worked the whole day with handing out flyers, signing the petition and talking to people. It was a good way to meet many different people and I also made some new friends. It was a good day since I also got to meet HH the Karmapa.”
Jenny and Daniel, volunteers of the HOPE Center, said that it was a good experience for them to work with Tibet Hope Center, the Tibetan Community and with the environment. They also said that they are happy that beside from the cause of Tibet, Tibetans also care about the environment of the world and they are glad that Tibetan people are aware of the global warming and all the other environmental issues.
Kunsang Tenzin, 24, Director and founder of Tibet Hope Center: “I am happy that we were able to help the cause by sending some volunteers for the whole day of the campaign. It is not only their responsibility to do awareness about the environment and global warming, but it is also our responsibility. I want to thank Tibetan Settlement Office for doing this campaign. Moreover, I also want to thank the volunteers from Tibet Hope Center for volunteering on that day.”
The campaign went well, many people were moved by the campaign and these sorts of campaigns are a must in the exile community in India.
On the 14th August, the HOPE center had special audience with His Holiness, the Karma. There were about forty students including the board from HOPE. The beginning of the day was bright and it was followed by rain after the audience with His Holiness. All the students were in traditional Tibetan attire.
There, with grace, His holiness Kamala spoke many words of wisdom. The part that caught my attention was when I asked him to give me more bracelets and blessings for my volunteers, he said,”you don’t need to seek my blessing, you volunteer are the ones who can bless others by helping others “Moreover, one of his main points was “no matter where we Tibetan are, it is very important to maintain and preserve our culture in the most possible ways we can and it is our duty to stick with the HOPE OF freedom and act upon it’. He also added,’like Tibet Hope Center, we has come for the younger generation to act get involved.
